Meet the Governors
Our governors are people who want to make a positive contribution to our children's education. They support and challenge the Headteacher and senior leadership team to ensure that the school is run effectively for the benefit of the children and staff. Some of the things they are responsible for are:
- monitoring expenditure and overseeing the school budget
- monitoring standards
- ensuring that policies and procedures are in line with regulations
- overseeing personnel issues
- monitoring and evaluating the progress the school is making towards the achievement of its aims and objectives
- health and safety
- safeguarding
They meet as a governing body each term, or more frequently if the need arises. They also meet at committee meetings and working parties; they are:
- Pupils, Parents and Community (PPC)
- Finance
- Curriculum & Standards (SICS)
- Health and Safety
- Pay
- Discipline
All governors attend most meetings. Any absences are recorded as accepted and reviewed as appropriate. Governors were rated good by Ofsted in 2016. Governors are also there to listen to you, gather your opinions and ask questions. They are a 'critical friend' to the headteacher, offering support, guidance and challenge where appropriate. They are a committed group of individuals from a range of backgrounds and experiences who help to make our school so successful!
Please find below details of how our governing body is structured, including the names, categories, responsibilities and terms of appointment for each governor. You will also find information regarding the skill set our governors have.
Maxine Govier
After retiring from teaching I became a governor at Albany in 2013. I sit on all the committees and am chair of finance.
I see my role as a “critical friend”, where I challenge and question, but at the same time being supportive and encouraging to ensure the children have the best possible education.
Gemma Marshall
I have been a governor for 18 years. Over the years I have attended all of the NCC training courses and I have even helped to create a more tailor made package to suit our family of schools governance needs. I have partly completed my AAT accountancy course.
Joanne Rogers
I have been a governor for over two years. I have lived in Stapleford all my life and joined Albany as a parent governor as I wanted to contribute towards my local community. My experience is mostly gained from my work history. Prior to starting a family I worked in administrative roles and from 2003 to 2010 I was employed at The University of Nottingham. It was in my roles there as a Finance Assistant (3 years), Medical Secretary (1 year) and Undergraduate Admissions Administrator (3 years) respectively, that I gained valuable experience and, which I believe makes me suitable for a position as a parent governor. I enjoy meeting people and being part of this great team.
Amanda Williams
I have been a governor since 1994, including holding the role of Chair in the past at a previous school. I am a Co-opted governor here at Albany and I am also the School Business Manager. I have financial expertise which I bring to the GB and support the Headteacher with the work the GB carry out.
Amy Jo Castle
I have worked as a primary school teacher for 12 years within Nottingham City LA and was part of the leadership team in school for the majority of this time. I have only recently joined Albany Infant School’s governing body as a co-opted governor although I took on the role of the LA link governor at Albany Junior school 18 months ago. My skills and knowledge are deeply rooted in the education sector from EYFS to KS2 and I aim to offer the school support and challenge with curriculum, assessment and transition in particular. As a KS1 lead and Year 2 teacher, I have extensive experience of data collection and analysis as well as monitoring of quality of work and lessons. I am familiar with a range of data sources used nationally and locally. I have a good understanding of SEND policy and first-hand experience of the challenges faced by pupils with additional needs, their families and those teaching them. Also, many years running a special needs sports group in Nottingham City and as working as Disability Trampoline coach has added depth and breadth to my experience. I have up to date knowledge of safeguarding procedures, through recent local authority training and experience managing concerns and contributing to children in need reviews.
I have experience of staff recruitment and performance management. Part of my role as a senior leader involved coaching and mentoring Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs) and providing ongoing professional development particularly in the area of mathematics and assessment to the whole school.
In the last few years, I have taken a career break to focus on completing an education degree. I have also taken time to promote my love of mathematics, art and engineering as a STEM Ambassador with STEM learning. This ideally suits my role on the governing board as a link governor for maths, science and computing. I have a love of learning and believe every child should be given the opportunity to learn in a fun, stimulating and compassionate environment. As a co-opted governor I aim to work with, encourage and challenge the school to continue to improve standards for all.
Jason Peters
First and foremost I'd describe myself as a full time dad. It’s been the most challenging yet rewarding part of my life to date.
Becoming a governor at Albany was a new challenge and has given me an appreciation of how much it takes behind the scenes to keep the wheels running smoothly.
My background is in engineering and more recently the tobacco industry. I feel the processes and health and safety approach I learnt within these industries can be a useful and valuable tool to complement the existing governor body.
